Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) QUEST 4000 m
The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) QUEST, based at Marum, is dedicated to scientific work and research operations in water depths down to 4000 meters. Today, it has proven it's value during over 20 expeditions since 2003. By December 2008, QUEST had finished 226 scientifc dives between 280 and 4014 m depth.
QUEST was originally developed as a commercial robotic vehicle by Schilling Robotics, Davis, USA, primarily for heavy duty offshore industrial applications in the deep ocean. In contrast to the commercial model, the Bremen QUEST has been adapted at Marum for a number of scientific applications.
Since it's initial deployment during expedition "M58-3" in June 2003, QUEST is routinely operated worldwide aboard german research vessels between 2 to 5 times per year. Expeditions include work for the DFG thematic program "SPP 1144, Spreading centers at mid-ocean ridges", the DFG Research Center Ocean Margins, the EU supported programmes ACES, HERMES, ESONET and many others.
