The 5th Early Career Scientists Conference for Marine and Climate Research (ECC2014) took place in Bremen from 21 to 24 October 2014. The conference allowed 100 international participants to meet in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere.

The conference was organised by and for early career scientists and continues the Early Career Scientists Conference series initiated by the three German Marine and Climate Science Clusters of Excellence in Bremen (MARUM), Hamburg (CliSAP) and Kiel (Future Ocean).

The conference theme was Natural and Social Aspects of the Earth System. Sixty-one scientific presentations were given during the five “regional” sessions, designed to foster discussion and exchange between the different disciplines of Marine and Climate Research in an interactive and innovative way; each session consisting of oral presentations followed by a dedicated poster session.

Contributors were invited to present their research in a variety of manners, including pitch+poster and innovative presentations (e.g. twin talks, pecha kucha, non-linear, old school, science slam). Three keynote lectures were given by senior scientists in order to inspire our way of interdisciplinary thinking. In a panel discussion it was questioned whether scientific networks are career-boosting or time-consuming. Social events taking place every evening provided opportunities to network in an informal manner.

Several innovative features were tested during the conference: abstract feedback, “one sentences”, scientific glossary, book of abstracts in epub format and peer-feedback on presentations.

We would like to thank all participants for their contributions and enthusiasm during the conference. We enjoyed the high-quality of research presented during the ECC2014 and we were appreciative of everyone’s effort to be understandable to a broad audience.
